Tutankhamun

c. 1343-1333 BC

Tutankhaten, as he was known when he came to the throne, was almost certainly the younger son of Akhenaten, and once appeared as a prince on a relief, found at Ashmunein and probably originally from Amarna. With the successive deaths of his elder brother and father, the nine or ten year-old boy became king, with his sister Ankhesenpaaten as his queen, and the generals Ay and Horemheb as the effective rulers of the country.

He seems to have spent the first few years of the reign at Amarna, and probably began a tomb there. However, fairly early on, the royal couple’s names were changed to Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamun, and the royal residence shifted back to Memphis, for millennia its traditional location. In his earliest years there, the young king was in the charge of a woman named Maya, whose tomb was recently found at Saqqara. Amarna may have remained for a time as the Aten’s ceremonial centre and the royal necropolis, but rapid moves were underway to restore the religious status quo.
